Refund

1. I filed ITR with refund of tax, but I haven’t received the refund yet, why?

There are multiple reasons which could be why the refund is not yet received.

Reason 1:

Bank account mentioned for refund in the ITR is not updated/validated in the income tax portal or the bank details mentioned in the ITR is incorrect or have changed.

Solution:

Validate/re-validate your bank account details (as mentioned in the ITR) in the income tax portal or if the bank details mentioned in the ITR is incorrect, file a refund reissue request.

Reason 2:

The refund is adjusted against pending demand of previous years. The details of adjustment would be mentioned in the intimation u/s 143(1) received to the mail.

Solution:

In this case, the demand needs to be verified for its correctness.

If the demand is incorrect, then it needs to be responded either with rectification request, supporting documents or grievance ticket on a case-to-case basis.

Reason 3:

ITR is not yet verified.

Solution:

If the ITR is not verified, then the same is not processed. So ITR should be verified first for ITR processing and the subsequent refund processing.

Reason 4:

ITR is not yet processed by the department.

Solution:

Ensure that the return is verified, as only verified returns are processed.

If verified and still pending, then you can raise a grievance ticket with the department.

Reason 5:

KYC details not updated with bank or there is mismatch between KYC details available with bank and PAN.

Solution:

KYC should be corrected and made sure that both PAN and bank match. Once that is done, bank details to be re-validated in the portal.

Reason 6:

There is no refund as per the income assessed by the department due to incorrect claim or tax credit mismatch.

Solution:

The details of income assessed by the department can be found in the intimation u/s 143(1) issued to the mail. The income assessed as per the department should be verified for its correctness. If the same is found to be incorrect, a rectification request has to be made.

Reason 7:

Confirmation for refund issue

Solution:

In a few cases, the returns are selected as per risk management controls and the department asks for confirmation from the assessee to continue with the refund issue.  In such cases, check your worklist in the IT portal for any such intimations and submit your confirmation for refund processing.

2. My refund got rejected as my bank account was not validated in the income tax portal. I have validated the same now. How to get back the refund?

You can raise a refund re-issue request in the income tax portal.
